Aurora police are investigating a double shooting near South Peoria Street and West Jewell Avenue.

AURORA – A search for suspects is underway after a man was killed and another was seriously injured following a shooting outside of an apartment complex Monday afternoon.

The shooting was reported just before 3:15 p.m. Officers found one victim at the Family Dollar at 2110 S. Peoria St., according to Aurora Police Department spokesperson Bill Hummel. That man is still alive and in serious condition, and had apparently gone to the store for help.

Investigators later learned the shooting happened outside the apartment complex across the street at 2095 S. Paris Way. Another victim was found in this area, and he was pronounced dead at the hospital, Hummel said.

“Right now, we are actively soliciting information from the public,” Hummel said. “We don’t know who did this.”

The two men who were shot were together at the time, Hummel said. There is no description of apparent suspects, and while early information indicates people may have been seen running away from the scene of the shooting, Hummel said it’s unclear if they were the perpetrators.

“We don’t know if they were scared, or [the suspects],” Hummel said.

Hummel said he’s hopeful police will receive valuable tips because the shooting occurred in a “densely-populated area” and the victims were together when they were shot.

Christian Willoughby, 17, stepped out to get some fresh air when he heard the gunshots and ran to help. Aurora police confirmed some neighbors tried to render aid.

“We tried to keep him alive as long as we could," Willoughby told 9NEWS. "He didn't make it. I'm glad I can say I tried.”

Kristen Schilz lives nearby and heard the shots:

“Luckily the pool was closed today so the kids weren't playing in the area of the shooting like they normally would,” Schilz said.

Aurora police have not set up a perimeter in the area because there’s not information to do so, Hummel said. The public is asked to be vigilant.

“I would consider the suspect absolutely dangerous,” Hummel said. “We have two parties shot here.”

Anyone with information that could be valuable to the investigation is asked to call 911 or Crime Stoppers at 720-913-STOP. You can remain anonymous, and could be eligible for a $2,000 reward.
