2 suspects wanted in connection with East Colfax shooting that killed 1, injured 5

One suspect has been arrested on murder and attempted murder charges in connection with the Nov. 1 shooting.

DENVER — Police are searching for two additional suspects in connection with a shooting that killed one person and injured five others in East Colfax earlier this month. 

The shooting happened around 2 p.m. on Nov. 1 in the area of Colfax Avenue and Verbena Street. One victim, 41-year-old Allen Dawkins, died at the scene. The other five were taken to hospitals.

Police said Wednesday that Dexter Martinez, 24, has been arrested on murder and attempted murder charges in connection with the shooting. 

Police are still working to identify two other suspects in connection with the shooting.

One of the suspects, wearing a red hoodie in the picture above, drove a Mazda 5 to and from the shooting scene, police said. The Mazda was stolen from the Five Points area on Sept. 24, and was recovered after the shooting.

The other suspect, wearing all black in the video, is an associate of Martinez, police said.

Metro Denver Crime Stoppers works by assigning a code to people who anonymously submit a tip. Information is shared with law enforcement, and Crime Stoppers is notified at the conclusion of the investigation. 

From there, an awards committee reviews the information provided and, if the information leads to an arrest, the tipster will be notified. Rewards can be collected using the code numbers received when the tip was originally submitted.
