WESTMINSTER, Colo. — Westminster Police said a man was arrested in connection to a shooting in a parking lot that killed a man and seriously injured another Friday night.
Officers responded around 10:35 p.m. to a strip mall parking lot at 8900 Harlan St. and found a man with a gunshot wound, police said. He was taken to the hospital where he died.
Police were notified a short time later that another man was at a local hospital with a gunshot wound who they said was in critical condition.
According to police, the shooting involving at least three people took place after an argument that led to several gunshots being fired.
A man was arrested on suspicion of first-degree murder, police said, but prosecutors later decided not to proceed with charges because "there was no reasonable likelihood of conviction at trial" if the defendant claimed self-defense.
Police said investigators do not believe there is a danger to the public.
The victim's identity and cause of death will be released by the Jefferson County Coroner's Office after an autopsy is completed.
Editor’s note: This story was updated to remove the suspect’s name after charges were dropped against him.
