Suspect in fatal shooting outside Denver shelter is identified

According to witnesses, the suspect was wearing a bright construction vest at the time of the shooting that happened near 48th Avenue and Dahlia Street.

DENVER — At least seven people reported witnessing a fatal shooting Monday night outside a Denver Rescue Mission shelter, documents obtained by 9NEWS show.

The Denver Police Department said the shooting happened around 8 p.m. outside the shelter in the area of 48th Avenue and Dahlia Street in the Northeast Park Hill neighborhood. Police said two people got into a fight, and one of them shot the other.

On Tuesday afternoon, police identified the suspect as Julian Huggins, who is being held for investigation of first-degree murder. According to a probable cause statement for his arrest, numerous people reported that they saw Huggins and the victim argue before Huggins pulled out a gun and shot the victim multiple times.

All of them said Huggins was wearing a yellow/green shirt with a construction vest. After the shooting, Huggins went to the front porch of the shelter and attempted to go inside. He remained there until officers took him into custody.

Investigators later found a 9 mm round in Huggins' pocket that appeared to match the four fired 9 mm cartridge cases recovered from the area of the shooting, the PC statement says.

One of the witnesses identified Huggins and the victim as residents of the shelter.

The Denver Rescue Mission released a statement about the shooting saying they were "deeply saddened by the tragic events outside of the 48th Avenue Center."

"The Mission is working with the Denver Police Department to aid in their investigation of the incident. We will remain steadfast in keeping the safety of the Mission’s guests, employees and volunteers a high priority, as we serve the community’s most vulnerable," the statement says.

Police said the victim, 31-year-old Taverance Flynn, died at the scene.
