Black journalists roundtable: Discussion on representation, code-switching, tokenism, DEI and seeking community

From behind the scenes to your TV screens, the Black journalists of 9NEWS are as different as their backgrounds, yet as connected as a family.

DENVER — It’s Black History Month, and in a month where 9NEWS highlights Black stories and voices, we wanted to take time to spotlight those on our team.

Diversity in the 9NEWS newsroom and newsrooms across the country is a work in progress.

We know why representation is important: it provides complex stories with unique perspectives, eliminates culturally insensitive mistakes and helps build trust of those who are rightfully distrusting.

From behind the scenes to your TV screens, the Black journalists of 9NEWS are as different as our backgrounds, yet as connected as a family.

When we embarked on this experiment to sit down together and share our experiences in the news industry, there was no set agenda. What transpired felt like therapy. Tough dialogue surrounding tokenism and limited representation led way to laughs about code-switching and hair care.

Here you’ll find snippets of our intimate conversation we hope you’ll view with compassion and an open mind.

Thank you for listening.
