DENVER — Justice advocates are continuing the call for action on behalf of Kilyn Lewis, a Black man who was shot and killed with a phone in his hand by an Aurora SWAT officer.
From Jor'Dell Richardson to Elijah McClain to Kilyn Lewis, the Denver-Aurora Community Action Committee said enough is enough.
"Ultimately, these things keep happening," Chair Brandon Gehrke Quintilla said.
Gehrke Quintilla's organization is hosting a 'week of action' on behalf of Lewis to raise awareness to the problems and tragedies stemming from police brutality.
"We need to mobilize a lot of people and organize a lot of people to fight against the systems that oppress us," Gehrke Quintilla said.
The week of action began Monday at the Aurora City Council meeting. Lewis' family and supporters attended the meeting to call for justice and speak with city leaders.
The council was set to apologize to the Lewis family, but instead, voted to remove the resolution item from the agenda. The move prompted Lewis' supporters to begin chanting his name. Council and the mayor chose to leave the room.
"It’s really evident that the city council and mayor specifically do not want to hear from the community, and that ties together with the mission, because we need a long-term solution to police brutality in our community," Gehrke Quintilla said.
Anndrec Lewis, Kilyn's wife, sat down with 9NEWS in June following the Aurora Police Department's release of body camera footage from the day Kilyn was shot and killed.
She said until change happens, her family will continue to fight on Kilyn's behalf and speak his name in front of city leaders.
Gehrke Quintilla sad the Denver-Aurora Community Action Committee will continue to support the family's voices and amplify their message.
"We need to be doing more," Gehrke Quintilla said. "Ultimately, this is a week of action that will hopefully catalyze that movement but fighting for apologies from city council isn’t going to achieve anything. We need to be fighting for change and fighting for justice for Kilyn Lewis. One of the main demands that the family is putting forth is to jail and arrest Officer Dieke and hold him accountable."
