DENVER — The City of Denver wants to hear from the Black community about concerns and issues they would like city officials to prioritize in 2024.
The Denver African American Commission (DAAC) launched a survey for the Black community to get their feedback on social challenges, government efforts and representation. They will use survey responses to come up with their top priorities to address, based on what is most important to the community.
DAAC, which works under the city's Agency of Human Rights and Community Partnerships, said one of its goals for the year is to increase its visibility in the community, and this survey will be a big part in that.
"It's a vital tool, not only for understanding but for advocating for the needs of the black community," said Fatima Thibou, co-chair of the Denver African American Commission. "Accurately gathered and represented data also holds the power to drive meaningful change. And that's why we're excited about this survey."
The survey is 11 questions, asking Black adults about topics like economic inequality, disparities in health and education, and housing and homeownership.
The survey will be open through Feb. 29. After that, DAAC will go through the responses and create strategies to tackle the issues that came up most often.
"We have been marginalized for so long," Thibou said. "This is the time where, if we don't act now, then we're going to continue to experience this marginalization, and it's going to start to evolve into something that we've not seen before. We're not we're not willing to let that happen."
DAAC plans to hold town halls to discuss the survey findings and get more feedback from the community. They plan to launch another survey next year, and then once every three years after that.
