ENGLEWOOD, Colo. — The Tim Tebow pick may still be the wildest it’s ever been around here, but there have been plenty of other picks that make you go “wow!”
How about when Mike Shanahan picked up troubled Ohio State running back Maurice Clarett?
Even over the last few years it’s been interesting. Remember both Bradley Roby and Shane Ray had issues before the draft that caused them to fall and the Broncos scooped them up?
That takes us to 2019.
Day one is supposed to be the most exciting day of the NFL Draft, but in Denver it was all about the second round.
John Elway made the locals happy by staying local with the 41st overall pick. Denver used it to select offensive lineman Dalton Risner of Wiggins High School.
A small town of 887 residents, there were only 28 students in Risner’s graduating class.
And then came the next pick — one that really made everyone stand up and pay attention. Missouri quarterback Drew Lock, whose fall reminded some of what happened to Aaron Rodgers from Cal to Green Bay, fell to Denver.
The Broncos traded up to take the quarterback. Joe Flacco, who was thrilled with a new tight end and offensive lineman, suddenly wasn't quite as happy anymore.
John Elway made it clear that Flacco is his guy ... right now. But you know there’s nothing better in the TV biz than being able to talk about a QB competition.
Thank you, Broncos! You made things for us all interesting again.
