DENVER — The Colorado Secretary of State's office on Friday announced the candidates who are certified for the state's presidential primaries, including former President Donald Trump.
The following candidates' names will appear on their respective primary ballots in the order shown:
Democratic candidates:
- Jason Michael Palmer
- Gabriel Cornejo
- Frankie Lozada
- Dean Phillips
- Stephen P. Lyons
- Marianne Williamson
- Joseph R. Biden Jr.
- Armando "Mando" Perez-Serrato
- Noncommitted Delegate*
Republican candidates:
- Vivek Ramaswamy
- Asa Hutchinson
- Nikki Haley
- Ron DeSantis
- Chris Christie
- Ryan L. Binkley
- Donald J. Trump
Republican write-in candidates:
- Rachel Hannah "Mohawk" Swift
- Walter Iwachiw
In addition to the named Democratic candidates, the Colorado Democratic Party requested a "Noncommitted Delegate" that provides "a place on the primary ballot for electors who have no presidential candidate preference to register a vote to send a noncommitted delegate to the political party’s national convention."
The Colorado Supreme Court ruled last month that Trump is not allowed on the Colorado primary ballot. The justices affirmed a lower court's ruling in a 4-3 decision that there was an insurrection, that Donald Trump participated in it, that his incitement of insurrection was not free speech, and that the 14th Amendment applies to the president.
However, the former president's name will still appear on the Republican primary ballot because he is appealing the decision to the U.S. Supreme Court. On Friday, the court said justices will hear the case in early February.
Because the ballots will be printed before the U.S. Supreme Court reaches a decision, Trump's name will appear, regardless of the ruling. If the U.S. Supreme Court decides to uphold the state Supreme Court's ruling, votes cast for Trump may not be counted.
"If review is sought in the Supreme Court before the stay expires on January 4, 2024, then the stay shall remain in place, and the Secretary will continue to be required to include President Trump’s name on the 2024 presidential primary ballot, until the receipt of any order or mandate from the Supreme Court," the Colorado Supreme Court said in its opinion issued on Dec 19.
Colorado will hold its presidential primary on March 5.
The deadline to send ballots to registered military and overseas voters is Jan. 20. The first day that ballots can be mailed to all other registered Colorado voters is Feb. 12.
Trump is also appealing a similar ruling by the Maine Supreme Court the the U.S. Supreme Court.
