A-Basin will be open until June 23 — that's not even close to its record

Five different years, visitors have been able to ski at Arapahoe Basin on the 4th of July.

SUMMIT COUNTY, Colo. — Because of this year's epic snowfall, Arapahoe Basin Ski Area will be open into the summer.

The ski area announced that slopes will be open on weekends through at least June 23. It will be open 7 days a week until June 2.

But this year isn't even close to the latest Coloradans have been able to ski. 

With a base elevation of 10,780 feet, Arapahoe Basin is well known for having one of the longest ski seasons in the country.

Here are some of the ski area's most notable open and closing dates through their history:

  • The latest Arapahoe Basin has ever closed is Aug. 10, 1995
  • Arapahoe Basin has been open for skiing of the 4th of July in 1993, 1995, 1996, 1997 and 2011.
  • In 2003, the ski area announced they would also be open until the 4th but ran out of snow and had to close two days earlier on July 2.
  • In 2011, the ski area closed on July 5 and then reopened just 100 days later on Oct. 13, 2011.
  • The longest ski season was in 1995 when Arapahoe Basin was open from Dec. 9, 2014, through Aug. 10, 1995 (245 days).
  • Arapahoe Basin's earliest opening date was Oct. 9, 2009.

Arapahoe Basin will be open June 7-9, 14-16 and 21-23 from 8:30 a.m. - 2:30 p.m. Only the Black Mountain Express and Lenawee Lifts will be open during this extended season.
