EAGLE, Colorado — Indoor rock climbing has plenty of advantages. They are air-conditioned or heated and you typically don’t have to worry about getting a sunburn.
Those are just a few reasons why Larry Moore, owner of Eagle Climbing and Fitness, said indoor rock climbing has become so popular.
“Growth in the indoor climbing industry has been tremendous,” Moore said.
His business in Eagle has been open for about five months, and at 10,500 square feet, Moore says it’s the largest indoor rock-climbing gym between Denver and Grand Junction.
There’s one room specially designed for kids, with smaller 28-foot-tall walls for children to climb.
Another room with 13-foot-tall walls has been designed for bouldering.
The main room has several walls more than 40 feet tall that offer a variety of climbing styles.
In 2020, the sport of indoor rock climbing will make its Olympic debut at the summer games in Tokyo -- something that’s expected to bring more people to the sport
Before all that, Eagle Climbing and Fitness will host Team USA climbing so athletes can train before the Olympics.
Then there will be a World Cup climbing event in Vail during the GoPro Mountain Games June 8.
