CU buys former movie theater to use for housing

Louisville is next to the McCaslin RTD Park and Ride, where students can catch bus rides to the main campus, CU Boulder said.

LOUISVILLE, Colo — Colorado’s largest public university has spent millions on a new property where it says it plans to build more housing for its students and staff.

The regents of the University of Colorado Boulder on May 14 purchased property in Louisville that, until recently, was the site of the Regal Cinebarre Boulder movie theater.

CU Boulder paid Regal Cinemas Inc. $10 million for the property at 1164 W. Dillon Road, according to Boulder County records.

The university wants redevelop the property into housing that is “attainable to faculty, staff and possibly graduate students,” according to a November press release announcing that the regents had approved the purchase of the land.

Nicole Mueksch, a spokesperson for the university, said via email that housing is a challenge for CU Boulder students and that the site will provide an opportunity to add more residential options.
