An 82-unit, $24 million affordable housing complex will break ground Monday at 3002 N. Peoria St. in Aurora.
The project, which will serve households earning between 30 and 60 percent of area median income, will include bike storage, a community garden, public art, a playground and fitness center. Ten units will be reserved for formerly homeless veterans, and it is near to the new VA Hospital.
"This project will make a real difference in helping veterans and their families by providing them with affordable housing next to VA services," said U.S. Representative Mike Coffman in a press release from the Housing Authority of the City of Aurora. He said this project is an example of what can be accomplished when federal government and local housing authorities work together to "help our veterans get back on their feet."
Called Peoria Crossing, it will also be close to the University of Colorado Anschutz Medical Campus and RTD's A and R Lines.
Rent-burdened households in Aurora are increasing and demand for affordable housing is on the rise, said City of Aurora Mayor Bob LeGare. He said Peoria Crossing represents the best of what a community can do to support and retain a diverse workforce.
