The units were sold at major appliance and department stores nationwide from April 1995 until April 1999.
They cost between $1,200 and $2,800. The recall is an expansion of a 1998 recall involving 111,000 television sets.
Zenith has received 45 reports where the coolant leaked, causing the smoking or charring.
In four of the cases, minor property damage occurred outside of the unit. No injuries have been reported.
The televisions in the latest recall were manufactured between 1995 and 1998.
The manufacture date can be found on the white label on the back of the set.
If you own one of these televisions, you should call Zenith at 1-800-777-5195 immediately for a free inspection and repair. You can also log onto the company's web site.
