WESTMINSTER, Colo. — At first glance, it might seem like a legitimate call from the Westminster Police Department, but scammers are spoofing their number in an effort to trick residents, the Westminster Department said on Facebook.

The scammers are calling from a number that comes up as “The Westminster Police Department” on caller ID with the associated number of 303-658-4360.

They're even identifying themselves as Westminster police officers and are telling people that there are warrants out for their arrest, according to police.

If the victim questions the warrant or claims they must be a victim of ID theft, the impersonating officers have attempted to convince the victims they need to purchase gift cards in the amount that is in their bank account so that the money can be transferred to a safe account while the issue is being investigated.

Westminster Police said they want to spread the word that they will never call and ask for banking information or ask anyone to purchase gift cards.
