Venture capital investment in Colorado startups up sharply in early 2018

Biotech companies attracted the biggest portion investment kicking off this year, bringing in a total of $316.9 million, the report said.

Denver Business Journal — Venture capital financing of Colorado companies jumped sharply in the first quarter of 2018, reaching $640.6 million — the largest first-quarter total in 14 years — on the strength of big investments in biotech and consumer service companies.

The Colorado funding total rose 45 percent above the $442.5 million that VCs invested in Colorado startups during the first three months of 2017 and topped any first-quarter total raised since 2004, according to a Dow Jones VentureSource report released overnight Thursday.

Thought the amount of investment rose, the number of Colorado deals in the quarter ending March 30 actually fell, the VentureSource report said. Investors closed funding rounds with 37 Colorado companies compared to 41 deals in the first quarter of 2017.

Biotech companies attracted the biggest portion investment kicking off this year, bringing in a total of $316.9 million, the report said.
