The new recorder combines an HD DVD burner with a one-terabyte hard disc and can record and store up to 130 hours of high-definition broadcasts. HD DVD players are currently available, but the unit will be the first model that can record discs. The recorder hits stores in Japan on July 14th and will carry a suggested price tag of nearly $3,500. The electronics maker hopes to sell ten-thousand of them by the end of this year. No word when it will be sold outside Japan. There's a format war over the next generation of high-definition DVD's. Sony has begun to sell expensive players based on a competing standard called Blu-ray.
