DENVER BUSINESS JOURNAL - Shannon Block is president and CEO of Denver Zoo, overseeing 300 staffers, 650 volunteers, 4,000 animals and a budget in excess of $30.5 million.

Zoo boss is a big job. But when Block was a youngster, she wanted to be president of the United States.

Born and raised in Edina, Minnesota (the infamous accent sneaks in occasionally), she went to George Washington University in Washington, D.C., to be close to the White House, then on to Tufts University for grad school.

The zoo gig came after high-profile stints at PricewaterhouseCoopers, Deloitte, Denver Health, and (most recently) CEO of Rocky Mountain Cancer Centers.

Now 35, Block personifies smart and happy as one of the most engaging executives in Denver. She's been at the zoo for three months.
