Wet weather perfect for some businesses, not so great for others

Saturday was the perfect day for one Denver bookstore to open their doors in a new location, but the weather spoiled another business owner's plans.

DENVER — A decades-old Denver bookstore is back open after a grand reopening on a chilly, wet day Saturday.

The Bookies is now in a stand-alone building at the corner of South Holly Street and East Evans Avenue, after 40 years on East Mississippi Avenue.

“It’s a big move,” said Nicole Sullivan. “We’re very optimistic about the future.”

The new store is on the site of an old fireplace store, which has allowed them to create more cozy reading opportunities, according to Sullivan.

They needed the fireplaces Saturday, as freezing rain and snow poured outside the store for much of the day.

That didn’t stop dozens of customers from coming in to check out the new location.

“When I first saw the pouring rain and the snow this morning I was like ‘oh no, what are the chances?’” said Sullivan. “But if it were absolutely beautiful outside, people would want to be outside so yeah, thank you Mother Nature!”

Other business owners were less thankful, like Blaine Baggao.

He was hoping to open Moonrise Garden Bar after a big ribbon-cutting ceremony at his new Wheat Ridge business Friday night. But rain and snow forced him to close on what should have been a busy Saturday.

Baggao said he's hoping for better weather on Sunday.

"We're going for it tomorrow, so we'll see what's on the ground. Hopefully the sun comes out," he said.

Back at the bookstore, Sullivan knows there will be beautiful spring days when her business will be the last place kids want to be. For now she'll soak up the moment, thankful for the latest chapter in Colorado's wild weather story..
