DENVER — After living in Louisiana for nearly two decades, Lara Stepneski-Mintz is bringing a traditional New Orleans-style dessert — snowballs — to Denver with the opening of Sweet Nola Snoballs.

Snowballs, also known as sno-balls, are mounds of fluffy shaved ice flavored with syrups. The frozen treat can be topped with sweetened condensed milk or stuffed with ice cream. Snowballs offer a smoother texture and soak up syrups better than traditional snow cones.

The dessert dates to the 1930s and are traditionally made from a SnoWizard SnoBall Machine. Today, it can be found at stands and shops in nearly every New Orleans neighborhood, according to the city’s convention and visitor’s bureau. It has been hard to come by in Denver until now.

Stepneski-Mintz opens Sweet Nola Snoballs on Wednesday at 916 Jersey St. in the Montclair neighborhood.
