Natural Grocers lands in Denver's Central Park neighborhood after months of delay

It will be the chain's 44th location in Colorado.

DENVER — A Natural Grocers store in Denver’s Central Park neighborhood will open this week, three months later than originally scheduled because getting city permits for refrigeration systems took longer than expected.

The Lakewood-based grocery chain is using new systems for its refrigerated cases that use carbon dioxide as their main coolant, not the more common hydrofluorocarbon-based refrigerants associated with damaging the Earth’s atmosphere.

Natural Grocers (NYSE: NGVC), which has 164 stores nationwide, first used a CO2-based refrigeration system at its new store in Brighton, northeast of Denver, which opened Sept. 30. The 13,300-square-foot grocery in Denver, at 3165 N. Central Park Boulevard, was slated to have its grand opening two weeks later, complete with promotions, product giveaways and prize drawings.

“They were both on track for opening, but the real difference was city permitting,” said Katie Macarelli, a Natural Grocers by Vitamin Cottage spokeswoman.

The Oct. 12 opening in Denver’s Central Park neighborhood never happened due mainly to how long the grocery store’s refrigerated case systems took to go through Denver permitting, she said.
