Lockheed Martin joins Blue Origin, Northrop Grumman in bid to build NASA moon lander

Lockheed Martin Space will develop the ascent vehicle to carry astronauts from the moon surface back to NASA's proposed Gateway space station in lunar orbit.

Some of the biggest names in aerospace propose teaming up to build the system that will land the first woman and the next man on the surface of the moon for NASA.

Lockheed Martin Space, based in Jefferson County, joined a team led by Kent, Washington-based Blue Origin LLC — the space company started by Amazon founder Jeff Bezos— that also includes Falls Church, Virginia-based Northrop Grumman Corp. and Draper, the research organization.

NASA seeks lunar landing system proposals for its Artemis program by Nov. 1. The quick turnaround is necessary to meet the 2024 moon-return goal NASA is pursuing after Vice President Mike Pence set the deadline in March.

Blue Origin's high-profile group will propose the landing system for NASA's Artemis lunar program, which aims to return U.S. astronauts to moon surface in 2024.
