Greeley-based meat giant reaches settlement in lawsuit alleging wage suppression

The defendants include JBS USA, the domestic arms of Brazilian meat company JBS SA, Tyson Foods, Cargill Meat Solutions Corp., along with other companies.

DENVER — JBS USA has reached a settlement agreement in a lawsuit accusing it of conspiring with other major U.S. meatpacking giants to fix the wages of plant employees.

Greeley-based JBS USA Food Co. filed a notice to the U.S. District Court judge in Denver this week saying the company and plaintiffs agreed to settle the case.

The details of the agreement will be filed with the court in the future.

The case, filed in 2022 by a beef plant worker in Georgia and a pork plant worker in Iowa, accuses 15 of the biggest U.S. beef and pork processors and their subsidiaries of suppressing wages of meat plant workers with practices dating back to the year 2000.

The companies accused in the cases collectively operate 140 plants around the country that account for about 80% of the beef products sold in the United States, the plaintiffs’ complaint said.

The defendants include JBS USA, the domestic arms of Brazilian meat company JBS SA, Tyson Foods, Cargill Meat Solutions Corp., Rochelle Foods, National Beef Packing Co., Smithfield Foods, Inc. and others.

Two industry consulting companies were also named as plaintiffs in the lawsuit.
