It's been a bad year for flying ants in Colorado

Flying ants. It’s no joke. They’re in Colorado.

Justin Doan with Colorado Pest Pros says they can be a nuisance, but getting rid of them isn’t impossible.

Just like bees, the queen is the answer. The use of a liquid bait helps get to the queen.

“The liquid bait is something we spray on the outside of the house and the ants will find it and they'll be able to take that back home with them...once they take it back home with them...has a chance to get to the queen and once the queen falls, the whole colony will tend to follow,” Doan said.

Doan says the morning and night is when they are most active.

“This has been an exceptionally bad year for insects in homes. A lot of it has to do with how much moisture, how much rain we collected this year plus all the snowfall," Doan said. "Then, now we’re getting these hot high heat days and they’re just turning all these bugs into breeding machines."

These insects shouldn’t bug you in the winter months as most of them go dormant, according to Doan.

Think: Just a few more months, then we can complain about frozen pipes.
