Cafe in Castle Rock ordered to close for violation of public health order still can't open while other restaurants do

C&C Cafe made national news for opening up its business to dine-in customers on Mother's Day in defiance of a state-wide public health order.

DOUGLAS COUNTY, Colo. — As restaurants in Douglas County begin to open to in-person dining, there's one restaurant that will have to wait – and not by choice.

C&C Cafe made national news for opening up its business to dine-in customers on Mother's Day in defiance of a state-wide public health order prohibiting in-restaurant dining due to COVID-19.

The Tri-County Health Department ordered the restaurant to close for defying the order. But on May 27, Tri-County rescinded its order to close after Douglas County's variance request from the public health order was approved allowing for, among other things, limited dine-in service at restaurants.

But C&C still can't open because the restaurant had its business license suspended. Under state law, a license can be suspended or revoked in cases of "imminent health hazard".

Gov. Jared Polis on May 11 said his office was working with Tri-County Health to suspend the restaurant's license indefinitely, and that it would likely be suspended for a minimum of 30 days. It's unclear, however, how long C&C's license will be suspended.

Meanwhile, other businesses in Castle Rock are opening, including Park Meadows mall.
