KUSA - Long distance hiking is a challenge on its own and Trevor Thomas, who lost his sight to a rare disorder in 2005, doesn't let blindness keep him from doing it.

Thomas is in Colorado to attempt to hike the entire Colorado Trail with his guide dog, Tennille. He wants to complete the 500 mile trek from Denver to Durango in five weeks.

He will leave the trailhead in Waterton Canyon to start his journey June 19.

According to his website, Thomas is the first blind person in history to complete a solo, end-to-end thru-hike of the Appalachian Trail, which is 2,175 miles long.

Thomas hikes as a way to keep his independence and as a way to educate people about blindness.
