Whataburger plans first Colorado location not in Colorado Springs

After making its return to Colorado last year, Whataburger has announced plans for a restaurant nearer to the Denver area.

MONUMENT, Colo. — Whataburger is continuing its growth in Colorado with a new restaurant south of Denver.

Whataburger franchisee BurgerWorks Colorado, LLC and the Tri-Lakes Chamber of Commerce will hold a groundbreaking ceremony on Wednesday to celebrate its first location in Monument.

Located at 17889 Fat Tire Dr., the restaurant is scheduled to open in 2024.

The restaurant will have a double drive-thru and an outdoor dining area with a turf yard.

Whataburger said the restaurant's exterior will also feature Whataburger’s "signature orange and white with corten metal to blend in with Monument’s rustic charm."

"With our unique outdoor dining area setting a new standard for the brand, we’re eager to transform this location into a vibrant gathering place, offering fresh, bold flavors alongside a warm, inviting space that truly fosters community spirit and extraordinary hospitality," said William Tamminga, owner of BurgerWorks Colorado. "We look forward to opening and introducing the Whataburger experience to our friends in Monument."

Irving De La Cruz, who currently serves as operating partner at BurgerWorks’ Whataburger location on Dublin Blvd in Colorado Springs, will transfer to the Monument location. The restaurant aims to hire up to 100 workers in the coming weeks.

Operated by the franchise group BurgerWorks Colorado, the company also plans to open a Whataburger location at 706 E. Fillmore in Colorado Springs.

Last year, the Texas-based burger chain returned to Colorado for the first time in decades, opening locations in February, September, and November in Colorado Springs. A fifth Whatburger opened in June 2023 in Colorado Springs.

Whataburger began as a stand in Corpus Christi, Texas in the 1950s and has since grown to more than 900 locations in 14 states.

The franchise once had a presence in Colorado, including a location on 88th Avenue in Thornton that became Jim's Burger Haven.
