DENVER — The sixth area code in Colorado has been revealed.
The Colorado Public Utilities Commission (PUC) announced Monday that 748 will be assigned to Colorado telephone customers in the 970 area code region starting in early 2026.
The new 748 area code will join 970 in western and northern Colorado cities like Fort Collins, Steamboat Springs, Grand Junction, Aspen, Durango and Sterling.
Starting in early 2026, telephone customers in the 970 area code region who request new service, an additional line, or to move their service may be assigned the 748 area code.
The current 970 area code is projected to run out of available phone numbers by the first quarter of 2026. The new area code will not be assigned for use until the current 970 area codes have been exhausted.
All current customers will keep their existing phone numbers and area codes and what is a local call now will remain a local call in 2026.
The utilities commission said there should be enough 748 numbers to last 38 years.
