GEORGETOWN, Colo. — At Werlin Park in Georgetown, Parks Director Kevin Gregory has spent the past few weeks working to open a outdoor ice rink for people looking to get in some skate time.
“It’s a one-man operation,” Gregory said. “Takes about two weeks to set the whole thing up and another week to freeze it.”
The rink is free. There’s even some skate and hockey gear for people to use, and the town is always looking for donated gear to add to the supply.
Marketing director Jess Jones said it’s part of a bigger plan to give people more to do in the mountains.
“Everyone thinks of Colorado for skiing or snowboarding, but there is so much more,” Jones said. “Whether you are on the ice or you can go snowshoeing up the pass, we really have the quiet mountain destination.”
Along with the outdoor rink, Georgetown spends a lot of time hosting events on the ice of Georgetown Lake.
They have clubs that race cars on the lake through winter. At the end of February, there will be a pond hockey tournament.
“I don’t think there’s an event we won’t do on the ice,“ Jones said. “We have our CCMRD Pond Hockey coming up at the end of February on the same day we are having ice-racing there.”
