Denver library closing for 6 weeks

The library has been under construction since 2020.

DENVER — Denver's main library branch will be closing for at least six weeks.

Denver Public Library (DPL) said its Central Library will be closed to the public from Friday, Sept. 20, until Sunday, Nov. 3.

The library has been under construction since 2020. DPL said it needs the six-week closure to ready the building for its full grand opening.

DPL will host a public grand reopening at the Denver Central Library on Sunday, Nov. 3, with a public ribbon-cutting ceremony and community celebration.

DPL said the six-week closure will allow for furniture moving, the relocation of staff workspaces, and the moving of the entire collection to its new locations within the building.

The Denver Central Library curbside pick-up and holds window on 13th Avenue, phone, chat and email services will still be available during the public closure.

While Central Library is closed, library patrons can visit other locations across Denver. DPL said the closest branches to the Central branch are Blair-Caldwell African American Research Library and the Ross-Broadway Branch Library.

“After years of planning and construction, we are thrilled to once again fully open our doors to the public in November,” said Michelle Jeske, librarian and executive director. “Central Library is a community hub in the heart of the city and we cannot wait for the public to explore and discover the library once again.”

The four-year renovation of the Denver Central Library is part of measure 2E, approved by Denver voters in 2017, which provided $69.3 million to renovate the Central Library and 10 branch libraries as part of the Elevate Denver Bond program.

DPL said the total cost of the Central Library renovation is $59.4 million; $43 million of the renovation is funded by the 2017 Elevate Denver Bond and $5.75 million is funded via Strong Library, Strong Denver, supported by the DPL Fund.
