AURORA, Colo. — Both sides of Cherry Creek State Park are connected for the first time in eight months.

Colorado Parks and Wildlife (CPW) celebrated the grand opening of East Lake View Road with a ribbon-cutting ceremony at a snowy Cherry Creek State Park on Friday.

The road was closed for eight months after it sustained heavy damage in rain storms in May in which the park recorded historic water inflow levels.

Cherry Creek Reservoir rose ten feet after six inches of rain fell over a three-day period. CPW said it was the largest single-event increase in water levels at the reservoir since 1965.

Park managers at Cherry Creek State Park said the high water caused 1,700 square feet of road and bank damage, ranging up to four feet deep as well as wetlands area habitat damage and swimbeach erosion.

The reconstruction of East Lake View Road and its culverts began in early November and cost about $607,000.
