DENVER – Over the weekend, someone purchased a rare comic book for $3.2 million. The comic book known as "Action No. 1" introduced Superman to the world back in 1938.
A Denver man, who owns 'Mile High Comics', used to own the same comic book – until he sold it in the mid-80s.
"I sold Action No. 1 through Action No. 10 – the best copies of all 10 of those books – and I sold them for $50,000.00," Chuck Rozanski said.
Sure, $50,000 might not seem like a lot compared to $3.2 million, but back then it was three times what the comic was worth.
"The gentleman that owns it right now turned down $5 million cash, and this was I believe three years ago," Rozanski said.
Rozanski says if you're looking to get into comic book collecting, now is the perfect time.
"This is the biggest gold rush for small investors in the history of comics!" Rozanski said.
As a collector, Rozanski has more than 10 million comics. Many of them are only worth a couple bucks, but it's those comics he says that could be worth big bucks one day.
"Rocket Raccoon No. 1 – one of the main characters from Guardians of the Galaxy – that comic sold for $5 two years ago and today I can turn them really quickly at $250," Rozanski said.
Ever since Disney purchased Marvel Comics, Rozanski says Disney is looking to turn lesser-known characters, like the characters from Guardians of the Galaxy, into big names.
This summer it worked. The Guardians of the Galaxy movie broke records and brought in millions.
"This is the beginning of what I think is going to be a great new world," he said.
Word from the wise: Rozanski says don't ignore the lesser known comics. They very well could be the next "Action No. 1."
