COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. — A new dog park opens in Colorado Springs this week.
Antlers Dog Park will host a ribbon-cutting celebration at 4:30 p.m. Thursday in downtown Colorado Springs.
The ribbon cutting is free and open to the public and will include giveaways from Downtown Partnership and Pikes Peak State College. Dogs are encouraged to attend, but must remain on leash unless inside the dog park fencing.
Part of the Downtown Historic Parks Master Plan, Antlers Dog Park includes two separate play areas — one for small dogs and another for larger dogs.
The park also features a large fence with double gates, synthetic turf, a sitting area, play amenities and a dog water station.
“We are excited for the new Antlers Dog Park and the many benefits it will provide to the Colorado Springs community,” said David Deitemeyer, Trails, Open Space and Parks (TOPS) Senior Program Administrator. “We are dedicated to ensuring that all members of our community have equal access to our parks, and this project is a shining example of that commitment.”
“By making the dog park accessible to individuals with disabilities, we are creating a more inclusive and welcoming environment for everyone,” said Tim Hartong, City of Colorado Springs accessibility projects manager. “This new amenity benefits the community by providing a space where pet owners of all abilities can come together, socialize and enjoy the outdoors with their beloved companions.”
With accessible pathways, synthetic turf and amenities, Antlers Dog Park is also ADA compliant.
The new dog park is part of a $510,000-improvement is funded thanks to voter approval of ballot issue 2B in the November 2019 election, which allowed the City to keep $7 million in excess 2018 TABOR revenue.
The park’s final master plan includes a tree canopy walk, an event garden and a picnic lawn.
