His name is Trooper for a reason.

The 10-day-old kitten was brought to the Foothills Animal Shelter with injuries so severe that the shelter did not know if he would survive.

Trooper was found under a porch, along with four siblings.

It appeared the whole litter of kittens had been attacked by a dog. Only two were alive and one was severely injured. The surviving kittens were taken to Wheat Ridge Animal Hospital, who then contacted Foothills Animal Shelter.

Trooper's right front leg was so damaged it had to be removed.

He and his surviving sister were placed in a foster home to recover. They were so young that their eyes were barely open, they were still learning how to walk and needed around-the-clock bottle feeding.

The wound from Trooper's leg amputation was so deep it had to be monitored closely for infection and cleaned often.

For several weeks, the shelter was not sure Trooper would make it or adapt to life on three legs.

But, after more than two months of specialized care, he finally recovered. The shelter says Trooper is rambunctious, healthy and loves his toys.

It turns out life on three legs is not so bad after all, at least for him. Trooper's missing limb hasn't slowed him down one bit, the shelter says.

Within one day of being available for adoption, he found a forever home. Cindy and Dave H. spotted him online and fell in love.

He now spends his days playing with his new friend Phoenix.

“His big brother Phoenix took to him almost immediately. We feel so fortunate that he's a part of our family and settling in nicely,” Cindy said.

His will to live has brought so much joy to his new family.

His sister, named Patience, was adopted last week.
