MONTE VISTA - A woman in the San Luis Valley was surprised when she gave birth to a baby girl this week that weighed 13 pound 13 ounces.
Mia Yasmin Garcia was born by C-section on Monday. She was 22 inches long.
Her father, Francisco Garcia, says her size shocked everyone including staff at San Luis Valley Hospital.
"They're all shocked that they're seeing a baby like that," Garcia said. "Even in the San Luis Valley, they were like whoa! They opened their eyes like they've never seen a baby like that!"
Her mother, Alisha Hernandez, was expecting a 7 pound baby and was scheduled for a C-section on December 4. She went into labor Monday and eventually had Mia by C-section.
Garcia says once Mia was born they realized she was big but were still shocked by the number on the scale.
"We thought it was going to be 11 or 12 pounds at the most," Garcia said. "The nurse, she got shocked. She's like come here! Come here! Come here! She's like come here! Run! I went and I'm like, what happened? She's like, well check out this! I checked it, and it was 13 pounds and 13 ounces."
Following Mia's birth, she was flown to Children's Hospital in Aurora with her father due to respiratory difficulty and low glucose levels. She's now stable. They hope to be able to take her home within the next week.
Mia joins four older sisters, Britney Gonzalez, Ximena Hernandez, and Yulissa and Yuliana Hernandez. None of them were close to Mia's size.
"Not even the twins that I have," said Garcia. "Both together, they weighed 12 pounds. Yea, we got her by surprise."
The couple says they're now done having children.
"We tried our best to get a boy," said Garcia. "We never got it. We're still happy though."
