Proctor's Garden: Protect pots and plant cuttings

As you protect your outside pots, there's also some gardening to do indoors in December.

DENVER — As cold weather moves in, take steps to protect your terra cotta pots.

Clay pots are especially vulnerable to cracking during freeze and thaw cycles. Dump the soil out, turn the pots upside down and cover with a tarp.

Meanwhile, there's some gardening to do indoors.

If you took cuttings before the first frost, those cuttings should be well rooted in their jars of water. Take them out and separate them.

Then, plant them in plastic pots and grow them on in a sunny window or under lights. Pinch out the growth tips to make them bushy.

Plants that can be propagated in this manner include coleus, bloodleaf, plectranthus and others. It's an inexpensive and easy way to create a whole bunch of new plants for spring.
