DENVER — Getting everything planted is just the first step.
Step two in fertilizing. At this time of year, I use an all-purpose water-soluble fertilizer for container plants. Follow the directions. Don't be tempted to overdo it. I try to feed container plants about every ten days.
It's not too late to plant trees, shrubs and perennials. If you're moving and transplanting a perennial, take care. Water the plant well before you dig and have the hole in the new spot prepared. Lift the plant. Divide if you need to.
Place the plant in the new hole. Don't stomp it in with your feet. Never do any foot stomping. You'll just squeeze out all the oxygen in the soil. Roots need oxygen.
Form a moat of earth around the plant. This will hold water and keep the root ball moist until the roots reestablish themselves.
New transplants may wilt in the midday sun. Don't be alarmed. They'll likely perk up when it cools down.
