'Today' show segment 'Merriest Main Streets' features Colorado town

During the holiday season, many Colorado mountain towns look festive as can be — but which town is the merriest of them all?

GEORGETOWN, Colo. — With their snowy winters and festive lights, many mountain towns in Colorado look like something straight out of a holiday movie — but this year, one place was recognized nationally for its holiday traditions.

Georgetown, Colorado was featured on the Today show's segment "Merriest Main Streets," which showcases different towns throughout the country that embrace the holiday season.

It seemed like most of the town's 1,100 residents showed up to celebrate their feature— even Parker the Snow Dog, Georgetown's elected mayor, made an appearance.

Georgetown loves the holidays, and its Christmas market has been adored throughout the country for years.

"It started in 1960," said Kevin Kuharic, chairman of business promotions and a long-time Georgetown resident. "And so it's generations of families coming here to enjoy the mountains and the holidays."

Iconic singer-songwriter John Denver is part of the town's holiday history: Denver stars in The Christmas Gift, a classic holiday film shot in Georgetown back in 1985, Kuharic said.

There are many ways to be part of the festivities in this merry mountain town. Whether it's snowshoeing, hopping on a snowy ride at the Georgetown Loop Railroad or ice skating, there's always lots to do!
