KUSA - People are often as passionate about their sandwiches as they are about their favorite sports teams.
National Sandwich Day is celebrated every year on Nov. 3 to commemorate the birthday of John Montague, the Fourth Earl of Sandwich. Montague is credited with inventing the concept of the sandwich when he ordered a servant to bring him lunch meat between two slices of bread.
The Denver sandwich, a traditional Denver omelet served between pieces of toast, was named the best sandwich in Colorado by Business International. Check out "The Best Sandwich From Every US State" gallery here: http://read.bi/1GfINrx.
Perhaps Colorado's most famous sandwich is the Fool's Gold Loaf because Elvis Presley loved it and made a special trip to Colorado to eat it.
Chef Nick Andurlakis first served Elvis the Fool's Gold Loaf after a concert in Denver at The Colorado Mine Company, which is now closed. The sandwich lives on at Nick's Cafe in Golden.
Here is the story as described by Andurlakis at foolsgoldloaf.com:
"Elvis really loved that sandwich, enough so that one night after returning to Graceland, he had the pilot 'fire up' his plane, The Lisa Marie, and head to Denver for another Fool's Gold Sandwich! Nick was told they were on their way and to meet the plane with sandwiches in hand at Stapleton Airport in Denver. Nick delivered the food and spent time visiting with Elvis and the officers on board The Lisa Marie."
In celebration of National Sandwich Day, a Fool's Gold Loaf from Nick's Cafe, and possibly Chef Andurlakis himself, will be featured during 9NEWS at 4 p.m.
Here's the Fool's Gold Loaf recipe from foolsgoldloaf.com:
"Serves one if you're Elvis. Serves 8-10 if you're a regular person."
INGREDIENTS
2 T margarine
1 loaf French white bread
1 lb / 450 g bacon slices
1 jar of smooth peanut butter
1 jar of grape jelly (Elvis' sandwich was served blueberry preserves)
Nick's Secret Ingredient!
METHOD
Preheat the oven to 350F/180C. Spread the margarine generously all over all sides of the loaf. Place it on a baking sheet in the oven.
Meanwhile, fry the bacon in a bit of oil until it is crisp and drain it thoroughly on paper towels.
Remove the loaf from the oven when it is evenly browned, after approximately 15 minutes.
Slice the loaf lengthwise and hollow out the interior, leaving as much bread along the walls as desired. Fill with an entire jar of peanut butter and an entire jar of jam.
Top with bacon and put the top of the loaf back on.
Slice to serve.
