Community Food Share client becomes volunteer in Louisville

A food share volunteer who was once a client, was inspired to give back. "I want to be part of this, because it's not just food," said Carigna Peña.

LOUISVILLE, Colo. — A client at the Community Food Share in Louisville was so touched by the help she received from the food bank that she volunteered at the organization to help others.

The food share delivers access to fresh food to people who live in Boulder and Broomfield Counties. The food bank feeds about 1,500 households every week across all of its programs.

Last month, the organization broke its record for total pounds distributed within one month which totaled 1.3 million pounds.

Carigna Peña came to the U.S. six years ago from Venezuela with her husband and daughter. She first came to the Community Food Share for help last October. She was so touched by the help she received, she came back the next week to volunteer.

Now Peña gives back every Thursday, because she said it’s more than a meal, it’s a community.

“I have also seen the faces of the people who come, and they leave happy, they leave with their carts full,” said Peña. "Entire families come here. And I said, 'I want to be part of this,' because it's not just food. It's to practice my English. It's to talk with the people who work here. And well, I’d rather fill up, nourish myself with the excitement of the people who are there.”
