After 6 cars crashed into a family's property, county finally adds safety measures

New safety measures installed by Park County are now in place to help prevent drivers from smashing into a home along County Road 72 in Bailey.

BAILEY, Colo. — After six drivers crashed into a family's property in six years, new safety measures are in place to help prevent it from happening again.

Plywood patches on Stephanie Kott’s home along County Road 72 in Bailey remind her why she’s struggling to feel comfortable.

“It’s a violation that you’re not going to get over real fast,” she said. “We kind of jump at every little sound outside. We’re both still doing that. That’ll be a while before that fear goes away.”

In the last six years, Kott said, six vehicles have smashed into her property. The most recent crash happened Jan. 6. Kott was at home with her husband when they heard a loud boom. Home security video shows a car crashing into their house after the driver missed a curve.

“We just had an explosion of stuff,” Kott said.

Kott has been working with a contractor to get their home stable again. As repairs continue inside, changes have been made outside.

“I’m just sad,” Kott said. "Sad that we have to go through this at all. They really should’ve done it when we asked them to years ago, and they didn’t.”

Park County crews installed the guardrail last week. They also added other safety measures such as chevron signs warning drivers that there’s a curve in the road.

“We’re glad that it’s there,” Kott said. “We’re definitely glad that it’s there.”

Kott said her home should be back to normal by this summer, but feeling normal again could take some time.

“Hopefully, the guardrail will do its job, but it’s going to be a while before we’re feeling real confident,” Kott said.
