PLATTEVILLE, Colo. — The cutest sheep in the world are making their debut on this earth. It's lambing season up in Weld County.
The Davis Family farm is teeming with new life. You can't get too far without a little lamb following close behind.
"This little guy is Booger," said Anne Davis.
Booger, is a 6-day-old Valais Blacknose baby sheep.
"They just bond with people and follow people around," said Rob Davis.
"They bring a lot of joy," said Anne. "They have a really friendly disposition, almost like a dog."
Unlike most breeds of sheep, who are typically more flighty, Anne and Rob said Valais Blacknose Sheep are uniquely affectionate.
"It's just now getting started in the United States and they're, they're so dang cute!" said Rob.
Rob and Anne both grew up on farms. Their love of the lifestyle also rubbed off on their daughter, Maddie Davis.
"I always knew growing up that definitely animals and ag, especially, was what I wanted to go into, runs deep obviously within this family," said Maddie, holding a baby lamb.
"This is Lila. She is a F2 ewe lamb," she said. "She's about three weeks old."
Just like Booger, Lila is 75% Valais Blacknose Sheep.
These lambs are part of the breed-up program, meant to bring this rare breed of sheep from Switzerland, to the states.
"For us it's the complete package, the looks and the personality," said Anne.
But raising this flock isn't their only goal.
"Part of our mission statement is to educate," said Anne.
It's why they offer free tours of their farm, so anyone can learn about agriculture, and the joys of watching new life flourish.
"To continue and be a part of the breed-up program and see each year how the different lambs and see them grow and thrive, it's so rewarding and fulfilling," said Maddie.
The Davis Family said there's only about 20,000 Valais Blacknose Sheep in the world.
Since live sheep are not allowed to be imported into the U.S., the Davis family was able to start their flock with purebred embryos and semen.
The Davis' keep a few of the sheep they breed and integrate them into their own herd.
The rest will go to farms starting their own flocks or wanting a pet.
