Senior dogs at Colorado animal shelter fetch grant

The Grey Muzzle Organization announced the winners of their grants, and Foothills Animal Shelter was one of the recipients.

GOLDEN, Colo. — Senior dogs are wagging their tails at Foothills Animal Shelter after the shelter announced Monday that they are one of the recipients of a grant from The Grey Muzzle Organization to help older dogs.

The animal shelter is one of 100 animal welfare groups chosen from nearly 400 applicants to receive the grant. The grants totaling over $1 million will go towards helping save or improve the lives of at-risk older dogs.

Maggie McSchaefer, director of behavior and sheltering at Foothills, said the $15,000 grant they received will help senior dogs get a second chance at going to a loving home since they can receive necessary veterinary and dental care.

Over the past 16 years, The Grey Muzzle Organization has provided more than $5.7 million in grants to support its vision of "a world where no old dog dies alone and afraid."

"Thanks to the generosity of our donors, we’re delighted to help deserving organizations like Foothills Animal Shelter make a difference in the lives of dogs and people in their communities,” Grey Muzzle Executive Director Lisa Lunghofer said. “Many senior dogs in Jefferson County are enjoying their golden years in loving homes thanks to the wonderful work of Foothills.”
