Denver Zoo welcomes new tiger

Viktor is a 12-year-old Amur tiger who is expected to breed with their 13-year-old tiger, Nikita.

DENVER — The Denver Zoo is welcoming a new resident in hopes of adding some tiger cubs to the zoo family.

The zoo announced on Facebook Thursday that Viktor, a 12-year-old Amur Tiger, is joining them from the Roosevelt Park Zoo in Minot, North Dakota on a breeding recommendation from the Association of Zoos and Aquariums' species survival plan.

Once he gets settled in, the Denver Zoo's animal care specialists will begin introductions with Nikita, their 13-year-old female. The zoo said Viktor has sired cubs in North Dakota, and that they're looking forward to the possibility that the two could make a valuable contribution to their endangered species.

The Denver Zoo said Amur tigers are generally solitary animals and that they prefer to live alone except to breed. While Viktor and Nikita will be introduced for breeding when the time is right, they will live separately and rotate between spaces in their tiger habitat.

The zoo said Viktor has a big personality and loves going for swims and playing in the snow. Viktor is settling in and will start making appearances soon.
