DENVER — The Denver Zoo is mourning the loss of Sabi, a beloved 11-year-old African lion, who was euthanized on Wednesday.

The zoo said Sabi was being treated for several chronic health conditions: hydrocephalus, kidney failure, and severe arthritis. Due to the progression of those conditions and the results of recent bloodwork, her prognosis for recovery and return to a good quality of life was poor, according to the zoo.

Known fondly by the animal care team as "Princess Sabi," she and her two brothers were born in the palace of the Royal Family of Qatar. Four months after her birth, the royal family determined they did not have the expertise to properly care for the wild animals and the zoo worked to obtain Sabi and her brothers, the zoo said.

The animal care team provided Sabi with many treatments including acupuncture to help her with movement, and said she loved her "spa days."

The zoo said the animal care team will closely monitor 11-year-old Neliah, who had a particularly close bond with Sabi, and the remaining members of the lion pride to ensure they are handling Sabi’s passing well.

“People assume we would never pick a favorite animal, but it was always obvious that Sabi was a favorite of many," said Kelsey, a member of the zoo's animal care team. "Her unique story of how she came to Denver Zoo, her small stature and hairy chin, and her love for her caretakers made her easy to love. She was a great “aunt” to Kalu, Kamara, Tatu, Oskar, and Araali; and she was a great best friend to Neliah. Predator Ridge won’t be the same without her, but I am proud of the care we gave this princess.”
