GOLDEN, Colo. — A baby fawn is lucky to be alive after its mother and sibling were killed in a motorcycle crash early Thursday morning, according to a tweet from Colorado State Patrol (CSP) Golden.
The collision happened along Interstate 70 near Floyd Hill.
“This morning we had a motorcyclist that ran into a doe and that doe was pregnant with twins,” Jason Clay with Colorado Parks and Wildlife told 9NEWS. “The mother ended up dying and so did one of the fawns, and the one fawn you’re seeing was able to live through the birth and the wreck.”
Officers with Colorado Parks and Wildlife (CPW) were called to pick up the orphaned deer. Clay said the first order of business was making sure the fawn received some food and water.
"That fawn hasn't been able to eat a meal yet," Clay said. "The first thing is to get some liquids in it. From there, they'll help to raise it."
The baby fawn will likely be taken to a rehabilitation center until its old enough to be released back into the wild, Clay said. He called the incident an unfortunate circumstance, but was relieved that it wasn't worse.
“Luckily, the motorcyclist was okay in this case and we were able to save one of the fawns," he said.
Clay said it’s unclear if the fawn was born during the impact of the collision, or if the birth happened shortly after the wreck.
Westbound I-70 was closed in the area for a short time while crews cleaned up the wreck. It has since reopened.
