PEYTON, Colo. — Up in Peyton, Colorado, there's goats galore! An animal sanctuary took in nearly 60 goats— and then, the goats had babies. Now, the nonprofit needs help supporting this growing group of goats.
According to KRDO 13, our news partner in Colorado Springs, OutPaws Sweet Home Sanctuary rescued 58 goats from a hoarding situation south of the city.
Carrie Thornburgh, founder of the sanctuary, said the original plan was to rescue about 22 of them.
But the plan changed.
"There were 58 females," Thornburgh said. "And we knew at that point that because the males and females weren't separated, that if we didn't take all of the females that there would be no point in even being there because the problem wouldn't stop, because the breeding would continue."
And so, 58 new goats arrived to their new home at OutPaws— but, unbeknownst to Thornburgh, more goats were on the way. She later discovered 17 of the goats were pregnant.
For three weeks, Thornburgh went into the goats' barn to check on them and help delivering their babies.
Finally, the last one was born— baby number 29.
As the group of goats grows, so does the sanctuary's needs: the cost for things like veterinary visits and hay isn't cheap, especially as the number of goats inches closer to 90.
You can help OutPaws Sweet Home Sanctuary support these goats through this fundraiser. For more information about the sanctuary, visit the OutPaws website and Facebook page.
