Positively Colorado: Santa is going (partly) virtual this year

Santa and Mrs. Claus are adapting to a COVID Christmas just like everyone else. And so are dozens of his Santa relatives who help him out this time of year.

DENVER — Since so much is changed this year because of the virus, I wanted to talk to Santa and Mrs. Claus to see how they are adapting to a Covid Christmas. We met in front of the City-County Building, where during a normal year Santa would be a big part of the 9News Parade of Lights. "Ho ho ho, you bet Santa's ready" he told me. "Santa's been working with Mrs. Claus getting the whole virtual thing set up. We are so excited and ready".

During a normal year, Mrs. Claus spends a lot of time in the off season working with Santa's brothers, sisters, cousins uncles and nephews at the Santa Claus School in Denver. They all help him spread holiday cheer when he's just to busy to visit all the malls and parties around the country. Mrs. Claus told us "I think my favorite thing about Santa is that every single person has Santa inside. And at Christmastime we all get to access that and that's just so wonderful". But the school had to make some changes this year too. "Everybody's had to step up", Mrs. Claus told me. "And no different with Santa, so this year Santa has become tech savvy!"

Yes Santa's helpers are doing a lot of their work on Zoom, visiting with kids and adults and taking requests for presents. Santa assured me he will visit all the kids in person, but will wear a mask and gloves, stay away from others, and safely deliver those presents all over the world. And he told me his message for the world this year is the same as every year, pretty much. "The message this year is peace and love and wear your mask!"
