GREELEY, Colo. — There are hats everywhere at Greeley Hat Works: Cowboy hats, western hats, fashion hats. Hats with unique shapes, tall hats, short hats, even a polka dotted hat.
Trent Johnson is the owner and main hatter of the company that’s been around more than 100 years. He’s the fourth hat maker to own it.
He says every hat is made completely by hand, from measuring a customer's head to shaping the final product.
Making a hat takes a few weeks, and the process includes cutting a felt form, then sewing, steaming, and ironing — several times.
While Greeley Hat Works is represented at rodeos and western shows all over the world, Trent is especially proud of his involvement in one TV show.
The company designed and made many of the hats for the characters in season one of “Yellowstone”.
Trent spend weeks with Kevin Costner and other actors to get an idea of what style would fit them best.
He said his longtime relationship with Executive Producer Taylor Sheridan got him in the door with the costume people.
And while he loved his time on “Yellowstone”, Trent said “Movies, television — that’s great, but that’s not our bread and butter. Our bread and butter is real people, that use real hats, that want a quality experience."
Many of the employees at Greeley Hat Works wear a shirt that says “a hatter’s gonna hat”.
And that’s been happening there since 1909.
