Never too cold for...ice cream

When temperatures plunge below freezing and approach the single digits, nothing is more satisfying than ice cream, right? Any takers? Believe it or not, there was more than one customer outside Little Man Ice Cream in the Highland neighborhood of Denver Thursday night.

KUSA – When temperatures plunge below freezing and approach the single digits, nothing is more satisfying than ice cream, right? Any takers? Believe it or not, there was more than one customer outside Little Man Ice Cream in the Highland neighborhood of Denver Thursday night.

“Ice cream’s always a good idea,” Kristine Isidro said with a laugh.

Isidro stood under a heating lamp in front of Little Man with a small cup of pumpkin vegan chai ice cream.

“It tastes so good,” Isidro said. “I love it actually.”

When cravings kick into high gear, perhaps it’s just not worth the fight. In Isidro’s case, that meant eating ice cream on a day that was about as cold as a freezer.

“I checked. I think it’s 16 degrees,” Isidro said.

Given the temperature and the bowl of ice cream in her hands, it’s incredible Isidro didn’t turn into a block of ice.

“You know, I actually don’t have a brain freeze, so I feel good,” Isidro said, taking another bite.

It’s a good thing Isidro stopped by Little Man Ice Cream because it gave Michael Cunningham and his coworkers something to do.

“It definitely gets boring,” Cunningham admitted. “But you know, we keep ourselves entertained by trying the flavors and mixing up different toppings with different flavors and seeing what works.”

As of about 5:30 Thursday night, Little Man Ice Cream had made just 23 sales. Not bad for a cold night in December.

“A day like today, we’re not really getting a line, but we still have our diehards who are coming in,” Cunningham said.

Of course, the popular ice cream shop is known for its long lines during the summer months.

“People wait in it, you know.” Cunningham said. “They’re crazy about our ice cream.”

Sometimes our cravings lead us to create new logic – the kind of logic that drove Pamela Hardy and her coworkers to Little Man Ice Cream.

“You know, I think the cold air like just promotes a sense of hunger for nice, sweet, ice cream,” Hardy said.

Stay outside in the cold long enough and that just might make sense. Perhaps brains had frozen over outside the ice cream shop, but the ice cream was just too good to care.
